To update the firmware on your adapter:

  1. Extract the files to floppy disks. It is recommended that the firmware image is copied to a different floppy than the BIOS and SMOR images. Failure to do so may result in file read errors during the flash update process.
  2. Reboot the system and enter the SMOR utility by pressing CTL A when prompted.
  3. Highlight the Adaptec RAID adapter and press ALT-A to display the Action menu.
  4. Select Flash HBA.
  5. Insert the floppy in the a: drive and expand the files by highlighting a: and pressing enter.
  6. Select the firmware file to flash and tab to OK. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  7. Repeat the process to update the BIOS and SMOR images as well.
  8. Reboot the system and continue normal system operation.

To recover from a bad flash:

In the case of a flash failure, the new firmware can be temporarily disabled and the upgrade attempted again by following the steps below.

  1. Power off the system.
  2. Remove the adapter and place shorting jumpers across the FW MODE 0 pins (J8) on the adapter.
  3. Re-install the adapter, insert the SMOR boot disk* and power on the system.
  4. The system will boot into the Adaptec SMOR utility.
  5. Highlight the Adaptec RAID adapter and press ALT-A to display the Action menu.
  6. Select Flash HBA.
  7. Insert the floppy in the a: drive and expand the files by highlighting a: and pressing enter.
  8. Select the firmware file to flash and tab to OK. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  9. Exit the SMOR utility and power off the system.
  10. Remove the shorting jumper from the J8 jumper bank.
  11. Re-install the adapter and boot the SMOR boot disk from the a: drive.
  12. Highlight the Adaptec RAID adapter and press ALT-A to display the Action menu.
  13. Select Flash HBA.
  14. Insert the floppy in the a: drive and expand the files by highlighting a: and pressing enter.
  15. Flash the BIOS and SMOR files and exit the utility.
  16. Reboot the system. If the adapter does not respond correctly, please contact Adaptec Technical Support for further assistance.
